What role should Alexander Nikishin play once he returns to the Carolina Hurricanes?
With the holdout ending on Monday, the Canes have to find where the defenseman fits into their plans while also making him earn his chance to prove himself. Alexander Nikishin, a former Russian defenseman, has agreed to return to the Carolina Hurricanes on a one-year, $3 million extension. This decision was a decisive victory for the team, as Nikishins was asking for somewhere in the ballpark of $9-$9.5 million. The team was only willing to pay around $6 million on a deal with more term. Despite offers for Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, Nikishan was reluctant to sign a deal in Winnipeg. Other teams also expressed interest. Nikishon's role on last year's team was a significant factor, as he spent most of the season with Shayne Gostisbehere on the Canes' third pair, playing on his off-side and on the power play. While he can play on the right side, I would like to see him on his natural side next to Jaccob Slavin.
