Man parked legally on a Raleigh street, and got a $90 ticket. How to fight back.
No one loves paying for parking, but we do it. But getting fined for parking legally? Here’s how to challenge the fine. Jerry Canterbury was parallel parked legally on South West Street in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, when he received a $90 ticket from Parking Revenue Recovery Services (PRRS), stating he needed to pay within 30 days or risk the company sending the bill to a debt collector. Canterbury disputed the citation, reported it to the city's parking division and alerted the state Department of Justice. The fine was dismissed a few days later, and Canterbury was told he didn't need to pay. The company has previously settled with Colorado attorney general after allegedly issuing fines ranging from $80 to $88 to people who paid to park in a lot operated by PRRS but entered the wrong license plate and did not pay within the 15-minute grace period. The North Carolina attorney general stated that private property owners and parking operators are subject to the state’s Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
