Understand
Capital of North Carolina and the largest city of the Research Triangle, Raleigh is the main political and economic driver of the metropolitan area. Indeed, business and politics are its main attractions. However, a concerted effort to expand the residential base and move events to the downtown area has made the downtown area attractive again. In addition, visitors will find many state cultural institutions, including a major performing arts center and three state museums, as well as a student atmosphere in the North Carolina State University, the state's largest university.

- 1 Raleigh-Durham International Airport (IATA: RDU, ICAO: KRDU, Raleigh-Durham International Airport) (20 km northwest of Raleigh) - The airport is now one of the largest national airports without a hub, a former hub for American Airlines and Midway Airlines, with some 9 million passengers boarding and disembarking each year, making it one of the most dynamic airports in the country. American's continued strong presence allows it to fly directly to London Heathrow, and a wide range of carriers (traditional and low cost) offer flights to most of the east coast and an increasing number of western cities including Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Denver. Air Canada offers several flights a day to Toronto.

Due to the large influx of residents from around the world and the large student population, there is a fairly wide variety of cuisine available with a wide range of prices. And, being a southern city, Raleigh still has a lot of affinity for traditional southern food and some modern interpretations of these foods. Of course, no visit to North Carolina would be complete without trying NC-style barbecue pork. There are actually two main styles in the state: Lexington-style (named after the city of Lexington) which uses only the pork shoulder and is served with a tomato and vinegar sauce and oriental style that uses "whole pork" and is served with a vinegar sauce. Both styles are available around Raleigh and some restaurants include both types of sauce on the table.
