Charges dismissed against NC teen accused of attempted medication abortion
A Durham teen and her boyfriend were charged this summer after their baby was born at 31 weeks. Now, the DA has dismissed the cases. Syeisha Johnson, 18, and Elijah Speight, 20, were arrested on allegations of attempting an unsafe abortion in Durham, North Carolina, a week after their 31-week-old baby was found in their toilet. The child survived, but it is unclear if the baby sustained any long-term injuries. Johnson, who was 20 weeks pregnant at the time of the pregnancy, allegedly ordered mifepristone, a medication commonly used to end pregnancies in the first trimester, from Virginia, and began having cramps the day before giving birth. She and Speight were later charged with child abuse for allegedly leaving the baby in the toilet. Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry dismissed all charges against the pair, stating that a woman has the right to choose and that reviewing the evidence supports her belief in women's bodily autonomy.
