Cooler fall nights bring fire pit safety concerns

The National Fire Protection Association recommends keeping fire pits at least 10 feet away from structures, fences, and combustible materials. The warning comes as unattended flames, flying embers and improperly placed fire pits can damage nearby structures, landscaping and furniture. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued warnings against fire pits that use pooled alcohol or liquid fuel, which have been linked to two deaths and at least 60 injuries since 2019. Gas-burning fire pits eliminate flying ember and smoke, but still present open flame hazards. While homeowners insurance policies may cover fire pit damage, AAA recommends checking rules and coverage details in advance.
