Shop Local Raleigh director sparks furor for Facebook post on transgender youth
Some Triangle businesses say they won’t renew their membership in the nonprofit behind Brewgaloo and the Raleigh Christmas Parade. Some Triangle business owners are demanding an apology or resignation from the head of the nonprofit Shop Local Raleigh, Jennifer Martin, following a controversial online comment dismissing transgender youth identity. The post was posted in the Facebook group Networking Women of the Triangle and was banned by the group's administrators. The News & Observer has reviewed screenshots confirming Martin's personal account sent the comment. While Martin made the post anonymously, her identity was made public to the wider Facebook group. Some members of Shop Local have questioned their membership in the organization following the controversy. The nonprofit promotes over 900 member companies and is part of the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association (GMT).
