Chatham County residents to call for statewide pause on data centers
Advocates in Chatham County are pushing for an extended statewide data center moratorium over concerns about water usage and potential river contamination. Chatham County residents are pushing for a two-year moratorium on new data center development across North Carolina due to concerns about water usage and potential river contamination. The call comes in conjunction with non-profit environmental group Haw River Assembly. Several counties and municipalities across central North Carolina have implemented some form of data center moratoriums, including Raleigh, Cary, Apex, and Durham. The moratoriums are being implemented amid public backlash over data centers, particularly ones focused on powering artificial intelligence infrastructure and tools. Chatham County has its own moratorium in place, which will last until February 2027, but it's not stopping plans for a data center near Moncure. The developer, Eco TIP West, plans to build a 750-megawatt data center at the Triangle Innovation Point West business park. Despite the lawsuit, Chatham has continued to develop regulations to address these new land uses.
