GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A mother of six is dead after a drive-by shooting in Gastonia that happened early Tuesday morning at a home on Morgan Street. Police are still searching for suspects.
Thirty-nine-year-old Latasha Cureton was sleeping in her bed when someone drove by and shot at her house with multiple adults and children inside. Her loved ones say they are devastated from the loss but they are keeping the faith that justice will be served and a suspect will come forward.
“It was like being like an explosion,” Cureton’s daughter said. “We thought it was a loud bang like something fell in the kitchen all of a sudden, it was multiple bangs like fireworks but then it got louder and louder. We ran and took cover and covered up the babies.”
The shooter or shooters sprayed the home with bullets while multiple adults and children were inside. The bullets pierced the door, windows, walls and more.
“It doesn’t make sense, they had no care for nobody’s life regardless of whatever the issue was, everybody’s life matters,” Sydney Weaver, Cureton’s best friend said. “Just to be so careless, if it hadn’t been her, it could’ve been one of the kids, and for what?”
Weaver says she and Cureton were planning Cureton’s wedding and now after tragedy, they’ll be planning a funeral instead.
“She would’ve said man what you crying for, I’m good, I’m resting. I’m at peace. I lived my life,” Weaver said. “She wouldn’t want us to cry, but what else can you do?”
Gastonia Police canvassed the neighborhood Tuesday morning looking for witnesses or camera footage, but at this time no suspects have been named. Cureton’s daughter is keeping the faith.
“I pray that if anyone knows anything, I pray that God pricks your heart to come forward and let the truth be revealed. No one has to know anything. Just come forward. God convict him,” Cureton’s daughter said. “Mark my words, the Lord will handle this situation count your remaining days of freedom because my God will come through in the name of Jesus.”
Gastonia Police say the investigation is active and open at this time. If you know anything call Crimestoppers of Gaston County at 704-861-8000.
