A man has been identified as Jose Luis Rincon Lopez, who was shot and killed by a Johnston County Sheriff’s deputy after he allegedly tried to take his gun. The deputy, Deputy Jonathan Lee, was leaving UNC Health Johnston County when Lopez confronted him and attempted to take the gun. After a struggle, Lee regained his gun and shot Lopez. The investigation is ongoing.

CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A man has been identified after being shot and killed by a Johnston County Sheriff’s deputy after investigators said the man tried to grab the deputy’s gun.

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation identified the man as Jose Luis Rincon Lopez.

On Monday, June 10, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said that around 5:46 a.m., Deputy Jonathan Lee, 32, was leaving UNC Health Johnston County. As Lee was trying to exit the parking lot, Lopez confronted him and tried to take his gun. After a struggle, Lee got his gun back and shot Lopez.

The SBI said that the investigation remains ongoing and no additional information is available at this time.
