The service, along with the existing Charlotte to Munich service, forms a comprehensive network providing seamless European connections and beyond. The new route will provide North Carolinians with direct access to major European business centers, hi-tech companies, and R&D facilities, as well as popular business destinations in the Middle East and India. The launch of service to Frankfurt was 10 years in the making, dating back to early conversations with Lufthana in 2014.

Lufthansa’s expansion in North Carolina not only bolsters its regional presence but also offers North Carolinians greater direct travel options to Europe. The introduction of the Raleigh-Durham to Frankfurt route, along with the existing Charlotte to Munich service, forms a comprehensive network providing seamless European connections and beyond. With these connections, North Carolina residents now have direct access to major European business centers, hi-tech companies, and R&D facilities, as well as popular business destinations in the Middle East and India. Lufthansa has been serving Charlotte for nearly two decades and now, with the new Raleigh-Durham service, operates 12 weekly flights from North Carolina to its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.

Flight LH408 leaves Frankfurt (FRA) at 10:20am and arrives at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) at 1:50pm. The return flight, LH409, departs Raleigh-Durham at 3:40pm and lands in Frankfurt at 6:05am the next day, local times. This new service will run five times a week—Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—utilizing an Airbus A330-300 configured in three classes. The aircraft features 42 Business Class, 28 Premium Economy, and 185 Economy Class seats, accommodating a total of 255 passengers.
“The launch of service to Frankfurt was 10 years in the making, dating back to our early conversations with Lufthansa in 2014 and culminating in today’s arrival of the first nonstop flight from Germany to RDU,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “We are thrilled to welcome Lufthansa as RDU’s newest international airline partner and provide convenient service to another European gateway.”

For many travelers, Frankfurt Airport is a vital connection point. Through Lufthansa Group, passengers have seamless access to over 300 destinations worldwide, including code-share flights with North American partners United Airlines and Air Canada. The airport’s lounges cater to premium passengers with diverse amenities—from private showers and warm breakfasts in the Welcome Lounge to numerous First and Business Class lounges offering serene environments to relax or work.
Lufthansa continues to broaden its reach in North America, highlighted by a recent route addition to Raleigh-Durham, marking the 26th U.S. gateway for the Group’s carriers. This expansion includes about 400 weekly flights to the U.S. Recent highlights include the inauguration of non-stop flights from Seattle to Munich and Minneapolis-Saint Paul to Frankfurt, alongside an increase in capacity from Munich to Washington D.C. using an A380, underscoring Lufthansa’s commitment to enhancing its presence across North America.
