RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Lufthansa launched nonstop service between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Frankfurt Thursday. Triangle businesses say it’s necessary to expand access abroad as the area grows.
“I’m excited that my son Will and I will be on the first departing flight this afternoon with many of you,” said Ellis Hankins, chair of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board.
The Frankfurt flight not only makes travel to Germany easier, but also streamlines connections to Europe, the Middle East, India, and Africa.
“It’s flying to 200 destinations out of Frankfurt, throughout Europe, throughout the world and many beautiful places,” said Heinko Reitz, Chief Commercial Officer for Lufthansa.
While eager travelers can enjoy the increase in travel opportunities, the Triangle’s growing business is one of the main drivers of this expansion.
RTI International CEO Tim Gabel told CBS 17 that a direct flight to Frankfurt gives more access to his company offices abroad.
“This was going to add a convenient option in addition to the Paris and London flights,” said Gabel.
