Weather changes bring fire risk from outdoor burning. Central NC is under alert.
If you need to burn yard debris, wait a few days until conditions improve. The National Weather Service has issued a "red flag warning" to discourage open burning across North Carolina due to dry, windy conditions. The warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Monday, with temperatures expected to drop to around 28 degrees and the wind making it feel as cold as 20 degrees. The N.C. Forest Service has identified careless burning as the leading cause of wildfire in the state. Despite no statewide burn ban in effect, the warning applies to 24 counties in the Piedmont and Sandhills, including Wake, Durham, Orange, Chatham and Alamance. The lack of rainfall across the state has left all but two of the state's 100 counties abnormally dry or in moderate drought.
