EV charging station developer to create 200+ jobs, invest $10 million in new Durham headquarters

The company, which was founded by seven of the world's leading automotive original equipment manufacturers, will create over 200 jobs. The new facility will include a customer experience lab for research and development of the software and hardware to create the network of more than 30,000 EV charging points. The average annual wage for each job will be $128,457, exceeding Durham County’s average of $90,727. The firm is expected to receive over $3 million in incentives over the 12-year term of this grant.

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — An electric vehicle charging station developer is promising to create hundreds of jobs in Durham.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced IONNA, LLC will invest more than $10 million to establish its global headquarters in the City of Durham.
State officials also said the company will create more than 200 jobs
“IONNA’s decision to make Durham County its home validates our global reputation for the Electric Vehicle industry,” said Cooper. “This cutting-edge company and its founding automotive manufacturers will benefit from the innovative ecosystem, highly skilled workforce, and central location of North Carolina to take its pioneering technology to market.”
The new company was founded by seven of the world’s leading automotive original equipment manufacturers– BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis.
IONNA will design, develop, build, and operate a high-powered EV charging station network and customer experience that will be key to increased EV adoption in North America, the governor’s office said.
The governor said in his announcement that the company’s new facility will include a customer experience lab for research and development of the software and hardware to create the network of more than 30,000 EV charging points.
“Our new headquarters will bring synergistic opportunities and collaboration,” said Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA. “Accelerating deployment and innovation within IONNA while contributing positively to the Durham and Triangle area community, paving the way for a prosperous future together.”
Officials said an incentive package for the company was based on tax revenues generated by 203 new jobs the company said it expects to create.
Gov. Cooper’s office reports salaries will vary by position but the average annual wage is $128,457, exceeding Durham County’s average of $90,727.
The company is expected to receive more than $3 million in incentives over the 12-year term of this grant. The company is only paid after the departments of Commerce and Revenue confirm they have met required job creation and investment targets. For every dollar of potential cost to the state, the state expects to receive $2.08 in state revenue.
