(WGHP) – While the tropics have been quiet for the start of hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center has their eyes on an area of interest in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
An area of low pressure off the west coast of Florida is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
The disturbance is forecast to move northeastward which would bring it across the Florida Peninsula over the next few days.
The National Hurricane Center has given this disturbance a 20% chance for development.
As we discussed earlier in the week, conditions in this area of the tropics are unfavorable for tropical development due to a heat dome and hazy conditions in this area.
The environment is forecast to remain unfavorable but the NHC states that some slow development is possible once the system moves offshore, into the western Atlantic.
Even though tropical development is not expected, heavy rainfall is forecast across portions of Florida over the next few days.
Data is suggesting that portions of the peninsula could receive 6 to 10 inches of rain through the end of the week with some areas picking up more than 10 inches.
If you have plans to head to the Carolina beaches this weekend, this disturbance will likely bring an increased threat for rip currents as it moves off the East Coast.
