This follows former Representative Mark Walker's decision to not participate in a potential runoff and instead join Donald Trump's campaign. Despite finishing second in the Republican primary, Walker chose not to trigger a runoff, which was his prerogative under state law. This decision effectively guarantees McDowell's nomination. McDowell is likely to be the next congressman for the 6th district as there is no Democratic challenger in the upcoming general election. In Raleigh, North Carolina, recent political developments have solidified Addison McDowell’s position as the uncontested Republican nominee for the U.S. House seat in the central North Carolina 6th District. This follows former Representative Mark Walker’s decision to forgo a potential runoff and instead take up a role in Donald Trump’s campaign.

Walker, who had represented the district for six terms ending in 2020, had finished second in the Republican primary held on March 5. Although the primary’s frontrunner, McDowell, did not secure the necessary 30% vote margin to avoid a runoff, Walker opted not to trigger the runoff, which was his prerogative under state law.

A spokesperson for Walker’s campaign confirmed his decision to abstain from seeking a runoff, thereby essentially guaranteeing McDowell’s nomination. Moreover, McDowell will likely be the next congressman for the 6th District as he faces no Democratic challenger in the upcoming general election.

The incumbent, Democratic Representative Kathy Manning, did not pursue reelection due to redistricting that substantially favored Republicans. No Democratic candidates entered the race for her seat.

Donald Trump expressed his plans for Walker in a social media post, suggesting that Walker would be involved in outreach to faith groups and minority communities for Trump’s campaign. Walker has confirmed his new role and highlighted his history as a “bridge builder.”

McDowell, who is stepping into the political arena for the first time, had previously been a lobbyist for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. His campaign was bolstered early on by an endorsement from Trump.
