RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — In front of the North Carolina General Assembly Wednesday dozens of in the LGBTQ+ community and allies joined together for LGBTQ+ Advocacy Day.

They discussed some of the top concerns impacting the LGBTQ+ community today.

“We’re bringing in members of our LGBTQ+ community and allies from across the state to come and talk to representatives and senators about how what happens in that building impacts them from the day to day,” said Elizar Posada, Executive Director for Equality NC

The group discussed concerns in the LGBTQ+ community regarding the workforce and how they’re being represented in classrooms. Posada says they saw a lot of legislation brought up in the general assembly last year that was harmful to the LGBTQ Plus community.

“Some of the bills we saw last year was SB 49 that we know impacts our trans and queer students in the school systems, we saw 808 that limits our trans and gender non-conforming youth to be able to access healthcare and then we also saw a bill attacking our trans athletes,” said Posada.

He hopes by talking to lawmakers they can make a change.

“We’re trying to make sure that as the legislature goes into this short session and we’re talking about the impacts of what happened last year, we’re also talking about why it’s important to protect our community rather than continue to push some of these harmful legislations,” said Posada.
