High tides prevent NCDOT from restoring highway access to Hatteras Island
Outer Banks highway NC 12 remains closed in Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, where last week’s nor’easter destroyed 1,200 feet of pavement. The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is planning to reopen N. C. 12 on Hatteras Island, the north end of which remains closed due to high tides. The department has begun ripping up pavement damaged by ocean water during a recent nor’easter, but no timeline has been set for this. Meanwhile, NCDOT continues running 24-hour emergency ferries across Pamlico Sound between Stumpy Point on the mainland and Rodanthe, south of the closure. The most vulnerable section of N.c. 12 near the wildlife refuge visitors center will be moved away from the ocean surf, but the exact location is still uncertain.
