People wrongly arrested due to software errors could get $2,800 in NC settlement

A proposed $1.5 million settlement could pay $2,800 to people wrongly arrested because of errors in the state’s new court software. A proposed class-action settlement in North Carolina would set aside up to $1.5 million to compensate people who were wrongly arrested or held in jail too long due to errors in software developed by Texas-based Tyler Technologies designed to digitize the state’s court system. The settlement would require approval from a federal judge and meet other requirements, including the expiration of appeal deadlines. Nine people from across the state are named as plaintiffs in the proposed settlement, including one from Harnett County, two from Mecklenburg County, and six from Wake County. Three cases involved allegations of extended detention, while others involved claims of wrongful arrest. The payout would allow other people who believe they were wrongly held in custody too long to apply for compensation.
