More than 280 people in NC laid off in Piedmont Triad area plant closures
One plant has operated for almost 30 years. Sealy Mattress Manufacturing Company, a major mattress manufacturer, is closing its 28-year-old plant in Trinity, North Carolina, causing more than 110 job cuts. The closure will result in 114 layoffs, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WTA) report filed on Oct. 23. The company is owned by Tempur Sealy International, which acquired Mattress Firm for $5 billion last February. The facility will be used as a research and development space for the product development team, and no corporate roles were impacted. Fresh produce distributor Foster USA is also closing all three of its North Carolina facilities, including its Winston-Salem plant, by March 5. The distributor cited an "unforeseeable business circumstance" for the short notice given.
