NCDOT begins work to reopen N.C. 12 on Pea Island

High tide overwash continues at Visitor Center; work dependent on improved conditions The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is working to reopen N. C. 12 on Pea Island after high tides from a nor’easter damaged approximately 1,200 feet of pavement near the Pea island Visitor Center. The highway remains closed between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe. Crews are removing the damaged pavement, reconstructing a protective dune line, and grading the road bed for eventual paving. Once conditions improve, crews will re-establish a one-lane paved detour and install sandbags to reinforce the dune lines and protect the roadway. Meanwhile, the Emergency Ferry route between Rodanthes and Stumpy Point continues operating, carrying 1,451 vehicles and 2,416 passengers.
