Wake students, principals set to discuss screen time in schools

Wake is dipping its toes into the debate over technology use in schools, which has bubbled up nationally and resulted in restrictions in other North Carolina school districts and major districts nationwide. Wake students and school leaders are set to discuss students' screen time in schools during a panel before the school board. The discussion comes as the board and district consider whether to stop issuing a laptop or tablet to each student. This comes amidst a national debate over technology use in schools, with parents and educators pushing for more restrictions. A North Carolina state law, set to be implemented in 2026, states students cannot access wireless communications devices during the school day without permission from a teacher. The district plans to have a new approach to devices outlined by December. A survey of students found that students in higher grade levels can spend about 90 minutes per day on their devices, while at the high school level, the most-used app was YouTube.
