Wake County woman charged with insurance fraud

A Wendell woman faces felony insurance fraud charges after investigators alleged she falsely reported hit-and-run damage to receive a $6,673.70 payment. Lashonda Renee Brown, a 36-year-old Wake County woman, has been charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies, and filing a false police report. The North Carolina Department of Insurance alleges that Brown falsely reported that her 2016 Mazda had been damaged by a hit-and-run driver. Brown received an insurance payment of $6,673.70 following her arrest on July 12. Following her arrest, Brown was issued a $20,000 secured bond, which was later posted. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey stated that insurance fraud is never a victimless crime and increases premiums.
