RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The National Hurricane Center is watching a disturbance in the eastern Gulf of Mexico for potential tropical development over the next week.

Right now, the chance of development is 20 percent over the next seven days. The disorganized area of showers and storms are around a front that is stalled across Florida and off the Carolina coast. This on top of a warm waters could help support tropical development.

Environmental conditions are mostly unfavorable for development; however, it’s possible off the east coast in the coming days. Regardless of any development, it would stay offshore. Northeast winds could pick up on the beaches later this week and dangerous rip currents.

The Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1. It runs through the end of November.
