Learn about the state’s ill-fated license plate slogan and the origins of what is likely Raleigh’s busiest street. Bob Echeverria of Holly Springs has celebrated his 33rd-straight year of having the biggest, showiest Halloween house in town, taking 12 months to construct. The NC Department of Transportation dropped the “First in Freedom” slogan from its license plates in 1978, ending a long-standing controversy. The state originally added the phrase to plates as a nod to the nation's bicentennial celebration, but many people covered it over with tape, leading to an arrest. The ribbon was officially cut on “Downtown Boulevard,” now known as Capital Boulevard, marking a $1.6 million project aimed at relieving traffic.
