Red Hat Amphitheater on Cabarrus Street has permanently closed as part of a major convention center expansion project in Raleigh. The City of Raleigh plans to begin demolition in two weeks as part a larger redevelopment effort. The former amphitheater site will become home to the expanded Raleigh Convention Center. Millions of dollars are being invested in the project, and an Omni Hotel is already being built to support the larger convention space. The replacement Red Hat Amphotheater is being built one block south and is expected to open in June. Tourism officials have begun marketing the expanded facility and are already receiving interest for future events. The expansion is set to open at the beginning of 2030 and the Omni hotel is expected in late 2028.
