When is Father's Day 2024? Some ideas for celebrating in Western NC, Asheville

Father's Day is known for marking a celebration of fathers by their children, spouses and communities -- what's less well known is that it was founded originally by a woman who hoped to honor her Civil War veteran father with the holiday.

When is Father's Day this year? And what else is there to know about its history? Here's what to know, how to celebrate in Asheville and more.

When is Father's Day this year?

In 2024, Father's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 16. The holiday takes place yearly in the United States on the third Sunday of June.

Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, is the original founder of the holiday. Dodd and her five siblings were raised by their father, a Civil War veteran, after their mother died in childbirth. Dodd said she was listening to a sermon on Mother's Day, which was established long before Father's Day, when she had the idea, according to Britannica.

The first Father's Day was celebrated in the month of Dodd's father's birthday on June 19, 1910, with the support of local religious leaders. It wasn't until 1972 that the day became a national holiday, though President Calvin Coolidge showed his support for the day's observance in 1924, and President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation recognizing the day in 1966. President Richard Nixon signed legislation that designated Father's Day as the third Sunday of June in 1972.

Father's Day began as a largely religious holiday. Over time, however, the holiday has been commercialized, cards and gifts commonplace. Certain customs are practiced by some on the day, such as sporting a red rose to signify that one's father is living or a white rose to honor a father who is deceased. Grandparents and uncles who have assumed parenting roles are also honored by many on the holiday.
